How to Draw Anime Hair Blowing in the Wind
Draw Anime Hair Blowing Wind – This tutorial explains how to draw anime and manga hairstyles that blow in the air in different ways from two different perspectives in a few examples.
Hair extensions in various ways are often used in anime manga to add amazing effects, show weather conditions, or show the direction (and sometimes speed) of a character’s movement.
Being able to show the hair movement convincingly while at the same time keeping the anime style can be a little tricky. This study uses simplified drawings and split hairs to make things easier, as described below.
Dividing the Hair into Different Parts To Make The Drawing Easier
If you are drawing anime haircuts like this in this example, it is good to think about it as you divide it into the front, sides, and back/top. Looking at the hair as individual parts instead of large clumps can make it easier to figure out how they should go when styled in different ways.
You can see the different parts of the hair shown in different colors in the above-colored pattern as follows:
- Red hair – previous
- Green-side hair
- Blueback / over hair
You will also want to know the location of the hairline as parts or all may be visible depending on the shape of the hair. The hairline will also help you have a rough idea of where the different parts of the hair are attached to the scalp. This will help you estimate what the hair should look like when presented in different ways.
Drawing Anime Hair Blowing Side Drawing
When drawing anime hair blowing sideways, the front view of the head is a great way to go. This idea will allow you to show direction and waves of hair easily. If you could, for example, choose a side view, most of the hair will be covered by the head, or it will point directly at the viewer, and it won’t be easy to draw from that angle.
To start a real drawing, make a drawing of a light line of the head (and hair) and at least the body parts the hair will reach down (if you want a full view of the hair). As mentioned, we will not draw facial features in this tutorial, but if you like, you can make a simple drawing of those as well.
Above this drawing, draw large shapes of hair (front, sides, and back).

Normally short hair will turn in the wind while long hair will also spin. With this in mind, you can draw short front hairs that are already curved towards the wind, while long hair on the back can have a “wave” similar to standing.
Please pay attention to the hairline and make sure you do not draw individual hair strands so that it appears to tear at the scalp. Usually, the base of the locks should stay in the same position as the hair in its natural state. This can be confusing as the front straight hair follicles are slightly curved. Could you do your best to measure their placement?
You can draw short haircuts by simply bending one side and long back hair with a “wave” over them.
Draw the main shape of the back hair dividing into smaller bumps towards the end. Try and draw these in different shapes and sizes to make them look natural.
You will also notice that the part of the hair that will be hidden behind the body is also shown in the example. The reason for drawing in this way instead of simply drawing two separate lines at once is to ensure that both ends will follow in the right order.
To wrap the drawing, erase all the head/body lines that should be hidden and add a few strands of hair that will come out after the main shape of the back hair. You can also add a few lines here and there to curl into the haircut.
Finally, pass the visible parts of the head and body with black lines to complete the drawing.
Drawing Anime Hair Blowing Back Painting
A side view of the head can be very effective in drawing hair that blows back into the air.
To paint this hair type, you can use the same heads as in the previous example. Draw short hair curves at the back of the head followed by the large shape of the back hair.
Reassemble the small/thin lumps on the back hair after drawing their main shape. Delete any scattered lines after you are done.
For hair blow-up, you can use a side or front view. In this example, we will go with the previous view, but the same principles will still work when drawing hair in a side view.
The hairline becomes even more important when you are drawing hair extensions upwards as you will need to determine the location of the lower parts of the front hair clumps and sides.
You can draw the lower ends of the front hair extensions that pass slowly, but if you want to show a very strong wind going up, you can draw a full line of hair. In the lower parts of the side fur, you will usually want to draw some curves as the hair in those areas tends to grow down and usually will not point straight up even if there is wind in them.
In the upper and lower extremities, you can draw clumps near the lower extremities of the hair in their natural state.
Draw the back hair facing upwards as an onion or flame shape of the candle separating towards the edges.
And after you have finished painting the main conditions for the hair, add a few extra strands to the back and erase any “see” parts to complete the drawing.

If you are painting a haircut, it may also be good to use a side/profile idea.
You can also apply the suggestions in the first and second examples of drawing front and side hair clumps.
Back hair painting is where things can get tough. Unless you want hair to hide your face, you will want to put most of the back hair on the far side of the face. You can also draw this part similar to the back hair in the first two examples in this tutorial.
To make the hair look natural, we will also draw part of the front hair extensions in front of the head. You can paint the assignment small and place it around the neck to keep the face very open.
To complete the drawing erase any scattered lines on the face and body and add extra clumps/wraps to both the back and front part of the back hair.
Conclusion
In general, anime and hairstyles can be very difficult to style, especially if you want to show them moving or blown in different ways. By applying the split method and starting with the important parts of the hair, you can make the drawing process a bit confusing and easy to manage.
